Have you ever walked into someone’s house while there was an apple pie in the oven? That warm, inviting smell of apples baking with cinnamon, sugar, and flaky crust. So decadent and delicious but not something that most of us want to indulge in on a regular basis. Well, we may want to indulge but we choose not to out of care for our health and waistline.
Since Fall is here and apples and pears are everywhere, I figured we needed a healthy alternative to get us through until the special occasion arises when a pie seems appropriate.
This is a simple dessert recipe that will not only make your house smell amazing but impress dessert eaters of all ages!
3 Pounds of ripe, Organic Apples (such as Granny Smith or Golden Delicious)
3 Pounds of ripe, Organic Pears (such as Bartlett)
1/8 cup Organic Apple Juice, Pear Juice or water
2 tablespoons Honey
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Peel and core the apples and pears. Cut into evenly sized pieces, approximately ¼†thick.
Place in crockpot along with juice, honey and cinnamon. Set to low for four hours. When done cooking, stir in the vanilla extract and let cool.
I like to serve with raw walnuts and coconut milk ice cream for a healthy and satisfying Fall treat!
Some additional ways you can use this compote are adding it into your morning oatmeal, spreading on toast with raw butter or nut butter, in a bowl with crumbled graham crackers on top, and as baby food!
